Kensington Removals Health and Safety Policy
Kensington Removals is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, contractors, customers, visitors and members of the public who may be affected by our activities. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with household and commercial removals, packing, handling, transport and storage services.
Our goal is to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property by identifying hazards, assessing risks and putting effective controls in place across all aspects of our removals operations.
Policy Aims
The aims of this Health and Safety Policy are to:
Promote a positive health and safety culture throughout Kensington Removals and within every removal project we undertake.
Comply with relevant health and safety legislation, approved codes of practice and industry guidance applicable to removals and related services.
Ensure that health and safety responsibilities are clearly defined, communicated and understood at all levels of the company.
Provide safe systems of work for lifting, carrying, loading, transport and unloading of furniture, boxes and specialist items.
Minimise risks to our staff, clients and the public during work at properties, on the road and at any premises we access in the course of our services.
Management Responsibilities
The company director and senior management hold overall responsibility for health and safety within Kensington Removals. They will:
Provide visible leadership and commitment to high health and safety standards.
Ensure adequate resources are made available for training, equipment, maintenance, risk assessments and protective measures.
Review this policy at regular intervals and whenever there are significant changes in our operations or relevant legislation.
Set clear health and safety objectives, monitor performance and take corrective action where necessary.
Ensure that all managers and supervisors understand and discharge their responsibilities for day to day safety management.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. All staff must:
Follow company safety procedures, site rules and instructions given by supervisors and managers.
Use equipment, vehicles and tools correctly and report any defects or concerns immediately.
Adopt safe lifting and handling techniques at all times and never attempt tasks beyond their capabilities or training.
Wear any personal protective equipment provided for specific tasks, such as gloves or safety footwear, and look after it properly.
Report all accidents, incidents, near misses and unsafe conditions so that they can be investigated and prevented from recurring.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Kensington Removals carries out risk assessments for our key activities, including packing, dismantling and assembling furniture, handling heavy or awkward items, moving goods in confined spaces and operating vehicles in busy streets and residential areas.
From these assessments we develop safe systems of work which may include:
Planning access routes, parking and loading areas in advance of each move.
Using trolleys, lifting aids, straps and other equipment to reduce manual handling risks.
Ensuring team lifting is used for heavy or bulky items and that loads are assessed before they are moved.
Implementing controls for working in multi storey buildings, stairwells, narrow corridors and shared access areas.
Putting clear procedures in place for transporting fragile, valuable or high risk items such as pianos, large appliances and specialist equipment.
Training and Competence
We recognise that training and competence are essential for safe operations. Kensington Removals will:
Provide induction training for all new employees, covering company health and safety rules, emergency procedures and safe working practices.
Deliver ongoing training in manual handling, use of lifting aids, load securing, vehicle safety and customer property protection.
Ensure that drivers hold the appropriate licences and are briefed on defensive driving, route planning and safe loading of vehicles.
Keep training records and review staff competence regularly, providing refresher or additional instruction where needed.
Vehicles, Equipment and Maintenance
Our vehicles and equipment are selected and maintained to support safe removals operations. Kensington Removals will:
Ensure vehicles are suitable for the types of loads carried and are fitted with appropriate securing points and protective materials.
Carry out regular inspections, servicing and maintenance of vehicles and lifting equipment in line with manufacturer guidance and legal requirements.
Ensure that any defects affecting safety are reported promptly and rectified before equipment is used again.
Provide sufficient removal blankets, covers, straps and other protective materials to safeguard both loads and staff during handling and transport.
Client Premises and Public Safety
Many of our activities take place at client homes, offices and shared buildings. We take particular care to protect occupants, visitors, neighbours and members of the public. Our teams will:
Plan moves to minimise disruption, obstruction and noise, especially in communal or high traffic areas.
Keep access routes as clear as reasonably practicable and signpost any trip hazards where appropriate.
Take precautions to prevent damage to floors, walls, doors and fixtures that could create hazards.
Park vehicles considerately and in accordance with traffic regulations, avoiding blocking driveways, footpaths and emergency access routes.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported to management as soon as possible. Kensington Removals will:
Record and investigate incidents to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
Provide first aid arrangements appropriate to the size and nature of our operations.
Ensure staff are aware of emergency procedures, including fire safety, evacuation, incident reporting and contacting emergency services.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
Kensington Removals is committed to continual improvement in health and safety performance. We will:
Monitor compliance with this policy through supervision, inspections and feedback from staff and clients.
Review risk assessments, procedures and training needs on a regular basis and whenever new services, equipment or working methods are introduced.
Encourage staff to raise suggestions for improving safety and to participate in developing better working practices.
This Health and Safety Policy is communicated to all employees and is available to clients and other interested parties on request. It will be reviewed periodically to ensure it remains appropriate to the scale and nature of our removals operations and continues to safeguard everyone affected by our work.
